The Future of Media

This is a great video. There's two versions, I like this one better though:

Very well done video...

Evolution of the Printed Word

Charlemagne and an English monk named Alcuin reformed the entire writing system of Europe in the 8th century. Prior to this reform, all of Europe followed the ancient Roman system. The Roman system used all capitals (this word is derived from capitulus, meaning chapter), and no spacing or punctuation. On a quick side note, lower case and upper-case comes from the position of the casings that housed printing blocks for press.

One of the reasons to introduce a lower-case was that papyrus or vellum was very expensive and they needed a way to fit more text on a page. They also introduced spacing between words and punctuation to seperate pieces of text. Punctuation had been used to signify pauses for meditation while reading Psalms.

Finally, a Mixer for Baijiu

I've been in China for three and a half years now and I always ask myself how the Chinese stomach their drink of choice, Baijiu. It's an excessively fruity, yet strong alcoholic beverage distilled from rice.

I've drank it on several occasions, usually regretting every time. I've tried various combinations because I'm a firm believer that every flavor has an opposite, something that can cut it, and why not? Soundwaves behave similarly, you have your noise cancelling headphones.

For Baijiu, I've tried almost every fruit juice, Sprite and Coke, all with disappointing results. The fruitiness of the juices couldn't cancel the strong alcohol flavor, and the sweetness of the sodas couldn't cover the nasty fruitiness. Today, I took a different approach and tried some sickeningly sweet iced tea that I do not like to drink, and it was a miracle of mixology. An iced tea goes well with some fruit, and the sweetnesss of it complimented, not enhanced the Baijiu flavor.

Best Recipe for Depression

I've been doing this for the past couple of weeks and I'm sure that I'm on to something. The best way to lift your spirits throughout the day is to start the day off right, and for me that means grabbing getting up early, hitting the gym, taking a refreshing shower, and then getting a big breakfast. Now you don't need a healthy breakfast, just a really satisfying one. You can eat healthy later on.

Now maybe it's not a cure for any serious bouts of clinical depression, but I'm confident that it will help in all but the more extreme cases. Enjoy!

Anti-US Sentiment on the Rise in China?

People have often asked me how feelings in China are towards the US in general. I'm usually able to report a cheerful outlook. My contention is that there is more than enough tension within Asia to keep Chinese minds occupied, and in my experience, I've found feelings towards Americans to be slightly positive. Although, it is apparent that those feelings have declined since Bush took office, the declination was not remarkable.

I can report that in the past two years, I've personally experienced blatant anti-Americanism on two occasions, both by drunk people in bars. On the first occasion, the person was very drunk and blurting out that they hated all Americans, but I found solace in how he fell down the stairs immediately after saying so. The second occasion was by a man and his girlfriend, while playing pool at a British pub. This second occasion was a little more disturbing because the man seemed to be affluent and composed. They made fun of me and my friend as we played them in pool, my solace was that we were more composed, took the higher ground, and beat them in pool.

I never found this remarkable, because I realize that this sort of behavior could easily happen anywhere, but it is interesting to note that it only happened in the past two years. This is obviously not enough to evidence that anti-US sentiment is on the rise, but it seems that it's on the rise in the media.

The media plays an inciting role in any society and can easily sway the feelings of the nation. Recently, the trend has been up-playing anger about the US reactions towards Tibet, and the following protests during the Olympic torch run. This has been a sore point for Chinese because they have a tremendous sense of national pride. As the worldwide media (particularly the US media) recoils at Chinese actions, the Chinese media returns fire with biased reporting. Now I'm not saying that the Chinese media is the only one guilty of biased reporting; both sides are. This virtual media war has the effect of raising anti-US sentiment.

Recently, a CNN reporter was quoted in the Chinese media as saying all Chinese are "goons and thugs", and this has caused quite a stir (article). He claims, and it seems to be the case that he was talking about the regime, but even if that's the case, these are the types of quotes that have to be avoided.

Politically directed, the media can stir up resentment on either side, and it's clear that through the media there is an increase in anti-US sentiment, but I still believe the general attitude towards Americans in China is as positive as can be expected with all these negative news reports, and it certainly doesn't trump anti-China sentiment in the US, where the attitude is more one of panic about China's rise to power and the imminent danger that an "angry China" poses.

Setting Up FF2 and FF3 on Same Machine

I have Firefox 3 installed and I wanted to set up Firefox 2 for testing, so here's the process (quick and easy for XP):

  1. Downloaded Firefox 2 and install it into a folder named "Mozilla Firefox 2"
don't add any shortcuts (might overwrite your ff3 stuff)
  2. Open the command line and run:
    C:\Documents and Settings\admin>"\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 2\firefox.exe" -profilemanager
  3. Create a new profile, I called it "ff2" and open using that
the new profile will not have any of your bookmarks or add-ons, which is cool for testing
  4. Now to create the shortcuts
    1. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
    2. Create a new folder named "Mozilla Firefox 2"
    3. Copy the contents of your former Mozilla Firefox Folder into the new folder
    4. Right click and edit the properties like so:
      Target: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 2\firefox.exe" -P ff2
      Start in: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 2"
